ajetoo buurman!

Here is a list of things that do not exist in Rapa Nui: an ice skating rink, a cinema, a go kart track, a shopping mall, a paintball arena, a zoo, a science museum, a bridge, a swimming pool, a mirror maze, a theme park, a Disneyland, an Apple store.
But something Rapa Nui does have is multiple surf breaks directly in front of the bay-front, which means a common pastime is to sit in the shade of the little tiki umbrellas watching the waves. And if you sit and watch the waves long enough, you might see in the distance 3 bald europeans climb off a yacht, pile into a tiny dinghy laden with surfboards, and trundle their way towards the shore. After arriving in their little inflatable water taxi at the the surf break, they jump in the water and play a fun game of watching-the-waves-for-hours-missing-most-rideable-sets-then-frantically-paddling-for-a-breaking-wave-and-falling-forward-off-the-front-of-the-board. This game is normally followed by thrashing around in the white water for a few minutes, burning precious calories and testing the strength of the leashes attached to the boards. It’s a good workout for your arms and back and mental resilience. Once the thrashing is over, and they’ve clawed their way back to the line-up (where you catch the waves), they’re just in time for another perfect set of waves to roll in. But by this point, with arms aflame and back muscles reduced to overcooked spaghetti, all they can do is watch the locals perfectly line themselves up with the shoulder of the wave to glide effortlessly into a carving ride across the face of the blue water. Rinse and repeat a couple of times and we are now exhausted enough that all we can manage is to un-elegantly flop our way inshore to sit in the shade of the tiki umbrellas, trying to not feel judged by the group of locals sat in the shade of the little tiki umbrellas watching the waves.
